Perch

Andrew Mau, BFA 2009 Title: Perch
Materials: Feathers, Porcelain
Description: Perch represents an exploration in feathers as a material for a furnishing object. After researching existing uses of feathers in decorative arts, my goal was to create an object that maximized the potential of the material to its entirety. Standing on the quills alone, this bowl exhibits the structural, aesthetic, and tactile qualities of the material. The purity of unglazed porcelain provides a delicate form that is naturally rich, supporting while not disturbing the captivating texture of the feathers. Each heart-shaped feather from the Common Pheasant was trimmed to provide a consistent, natural color as well as to convey opposing interior and exterior textures.
