description:
A continuous cardstock strip loops through a music box over the course of an hour. Every five minutes, the music box is activated by one of 12 shapes pierced into the strip. Sound repeats in a cycle of twelve notes per hour, creating an ordered randomness that momentarily de-contextualizes time for the listener.

User interaction dictates the form of this lamp, making it specific to the space it inhabits and the person who owns it. By filling the lamp with objects of personal significance, the user shapes and colors the light it emits in a unique way. The lamp becomes a one-of-a-kind illuminated scrapbook - a polymorphic object that retains and displays physical memories.

The Hydroscopic Calendar reminds us that nature measures time in its own way. Seasonal variation causes changes in the wood elements of the device - they expand during the humid summer and contract during the dry winter. A dial indicator, sensitive to 1/1000th of an inch, measures the movement and indicates a transition from one season to the next.

description:
Inspired by the ancient Roman water clock, Clepsydra (water thief) comments on our efforts to increase efficiency and keep up with the accelerating pace of life. The user pours the contents of a disposable water bottle into a beaker. Over a period of 40 minutes, the water drips slowly into a collecting funnel, where it is finally ready to drink. Clepsydra creates a time span for slowness and patience while it also soothes and mesmerizes the user with its steady drip.

This object plays on the common LED-display digital clock with physical segments that slowly fade in and out of a white surface. The D/A Clock introduces new characteristics to the digital mediation of time: a physical dimension and intermediate states - the time between 0 and 1.

The modern world bombards us with information that speeds by at an overwhelming and impractical pace. This device comments on information overload with seven split-flap displays modified to shuffle rapidly, creating a continuously moving image of numbers. The blur of information calls for intense focus as the data flashes by at a nearly incomprehensible rate.

description:
This timepiece makes the user subtly aware of the passage of time. A strip of LEDs illuminates the top of the object, which makes one rotation every 12 hours. Four indentations in the base take the place of numbers on a clock dial: once the user is accustomed to the movement of the object relative to its context in space, telling time is easy and fluid.

description:
The familiar form of a coffee cup is taken through a series of transformations, generating a graphic representation of elapsed time. The circular shape of the cup first shifts into an ellipse, and then stretches into a line. The volume of the cup changes while the profile remains the same. Like a movie in three frames, this set simulates the action of time "pressing in" on a form. This transformation makes the user more aware of the importance of small events in the scheme of a larger story.

This stool is an examination of chronologies and timekeeping methods. Rings in the slice of tree mark time in response to environmental and natural circumstances. In contrast to this organic method of tracking time, the top of the stool describes an atomic clock - an artificial timekeeping method that allows for precise measurements. This object is intended to inspire contemplation about disparate methods of keeping time.

The Life Cycle table holds a series of eleven transparent acrylic plates, each of which displays a stage in the life of a plant. The chronological progression from seedling to maturity and decay reminds the viewer that even natural beauty is confined by the finite boundaries of physical existence.
